Keeping neutrals from going flat
The risk with a neutral scheme is that it turns into beige mush. Two things prevent it. Vary the texture in the design, so a woven-looking pattern sits next to a smooth one. And vary the depth, so there is at least one clearly darker piece anchoring a group of pale ones.

Do cream pillows stay clean outside?
Polyester resists staining far better than cotton because it does not absorb. Spot clean marks when they happen rather than letting them dry in.
Are neutrals boring?
Only if everything is the same depth. A group with real contrast between light and dark reads as considered, not flat.
Do neutrals work all year?
They are the most year-round option there is. A sand and cream scheme looks right in July and in November.
