Frequently Asked Questions
The product
What are outdoor pillows made of?
100% spun polyester, both the cover and the fill. The design is printed directly into the fabric on both sides, and each pillow is finished with a sewn seam closure.
Are the designs printed on both sides?
Yes, front and back. You never have to turn a pillow the right way round.
Will the print crack or peel?
No. Direct-to-fabric printing puts the colour into the fibre rather than laying it on top, so there is no layer that can lift.
Do the covers come off?
No. The sewn seam closure is what keeps water and grit out of the fill. It also means there is no zip to rust or catch.
Sizes
What sizes are available?
Two: an 18" x 18" square and a 20" x 14" lumbar. Both measurements are taken across the centre of the pillow.
What size should I choose?
The 18" square suits most patio chairs and outdoor sofas and is the safest default. Choose the lumbar for deep seats, benches, swings and Adirondack chairs, where a square sits too high to support your back.
Can I use outdoor lumbar pillows indoors as well?
Yes. The fabric is chosen for durability rather than for a particular room, and many people run the same design from a sunroom out onto the patio.
Weather
Can outdoor pillows get wet?
Yes. The fabric is water-resistant and rain, dew and sprinklers are no problem. Stand a soaked pillow on its edge afterwards so water drains from the seam.
Are outdoor pillows waterproof?
Water-resistant rather than waterproof. They shed rain and dry on their own, but they are not sealed against being submerged.
Are outdoor pillows resistant to fading?
Yes. The polyester is UV-resistant and the colour is printed into the fibre. Deep saturated shades hold longer than very pale ones.
Can outdoor pillows stay outside all year round?
They handle weather well, but they last considerably longer if you bring them in over winter. Constant damp with no chance to dry is what shortens their life, not the cold.
Care
How do I clean outdoor pillows?
Spot clean with mild soap and lukewarm water, dabbing rather than scrubbing, then air-dry completely. Dry cleaning is the alternative.
Can you wash outdoor pillows in the washing machine?
No. A machine stresses the sewn seam and clumps the fill, and the pillow comes out misshapen. Spot cleaning works well on this fabric because polyester does not absorb.
How do I remove mildew from outdoor pillows?
Spot clean with a mild soap solution, wipe with clean water, and dry fully in open air. Avoid bleach, which lifts the colour along with the mildew.
How can I keep outdoor pillows clean and fresh?
Brush them off weekly, deal with marks the day they happen, and never store one damp.
Practical
How do I keep outdoor pillows from blowing away?
Tuck them behind the seat cushion rather than on top of it, and bring them in before a storm. In an exposed spot the lumbar holds its place better than a square, because it sits lower in the seat and gives the wind less to catch.
How many pillows should I buy?
Two matching squares on a loveseat, or two squares with a lumbar between them across a sofa. Odd numbers look relaxed, even numbers look formal.
