A decorative pillow is bought for how it looks, which means the print has to survive being outside or the whole point is lost. Direct-to-fabric printing puts the colour into the fibre rather than onto the surface, and the polyester underneath is UV-resistant. That combination is why these still look like the photograph at the end of the season.

Printed on both sides, finished with a sewn seam closure, and filled so they keep their shape rather than sagging into the seat. The fabric does not wrinkle, so there is nothing to press before guests arrive.

The reliable formula is one design that carries the pattern, one that carries the colour, and one plain or near-plain to give the eye somewhere to rest. Vary the scale between them: a large motif next to a small one reads as deliberate, two medium ones next to each other read as a mistake.

Spot clean only, or dry clean. Do not put it through a washing machine, which stresses the sewn seam and can distort the fill.
